Reading
Reading is crucial in order to achieve student success. There are numerous reasons that support the various benefits of reading. Reading encourages language learning through exposure to elements such as vocabulary, punctuation, and grammar. Reading improves your vocabulary skills and it helps with your memory and ability to absorb new material. When you read, you can learn new information and it helps to build self-esteem and confidence.
It is a great idea to read aloud to a family member or pet at home. Not only does reading out loud help build confidence, it also improves comprehension, fluency and accuracy.
As Janet Allen states in her book, Words, Words, Words, "If average fifth graders spend about 25 minutes a day reading, they encounter about twenty thousand unfamiliar words. If one-twentieth of those words can be figured out from context, they learn about a thousand new words per year from that strategy; hardly an insignificant amount!"
We are now members of Epic Reading online. Please feel free to use our class account to read a variety of great books online at your convenience or have one read to you through their selection of audio books. Happy reading!
Students, please remember to fill out your reading log regularly so that you have an up-to-date record of your completed reading. Remember to try and read a wide variety of genres and authors so that you can expand your vocabulary and be exposed to different writing styles.
**Reading logs will be collected every other month so make sure you are keeping them up-to-date.
